What is interactive design??
“designing interactive products to support people in there everyday and working lives” and “creating user expereinces that enhance and extend the way people work, communicate and interact”

Okay, so Initially I wanted to do something fun (a game) using encryption/decryption when we first got notice of the project. But I want to use the camera and touch-screen aspect of it.. so….

*continues thinking*

Before I start into thinking about the iPhone application project, or anything else like everyone else is, I wanted to know more about interaction design (what is it, and what I can really do in regards to designing interactively). The lecture really was a big overview when I started looking into depth by reading “Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction (2002) John Wiley & Sons, Inc.” (the Only book on the reading list).
I’ve just started when I recieved an email about the book being on recall (so I don’t get to borrow it until 20th September, but till 6th August! and for everyday I don’t return it, its $2 fee). That leaves me with only 4 days to read this 519-paged resource book (I ain’t going to uni to deliever it on Monday)..
Until then! (I don’t think there’ll be any more blogging until I’ve finished).

The first lectures for Semester 2, 2007 DECO1200 and DECO2101

Rob introducing the iPhone
On the Thursday lecture, he also talked about web 2.0, AJAX, telling us to blog (document lectures and take photos!)

Justin noticing and saying hi ^^ *greetings*

His lecture introduced web 2.0- social networking and rich interlinking of sites to other sites, ‘meme’ (mind spreads the virus, gossip/chain mail’, ’first class citizen of the web’, some websites:
http://boingboing.net (blog)
http://laughingsquid.com (blogging service)
http://wordpress.com or .org (make own blog)
http://tiddlywiki.com (make own blog by saving and done!)
And introduced the dreaded assignments.
But just being accessed on documentation for process – our blogs! (should be easy – right? lol)

A friend of mine, who somehow happened to do a google search on my name, said I had alot of results showing. So where did they get all this information?

Well some may have been previous high schools (I’ve moved 9 times, and been to 7 different schools since Year 1)
     or
from winning competitions (won Loreal’s lipgloss)
     or
winning a writing competition in Shanghai magazine a couple years back… (creative writing about me being a tiger at the zoo lol)
     or
its from the various games I’ve played (such as IWKY where in the newly updated reset people Pretended to be me and my partner)
     or
games still playing (http://blue.bots2.net and http://www.ottawacrime.org
     or
forums (free sweets: http://www.sweetcollect.com/?referer=hotcocoa – haha it’s true, I’ve had 451 sweets dispached already – free postage too! -only downside is tooth cavities lol)
     or
from blogs and online profiles!

Okay, with all the online network communications – chat, forums and web logs, I’ve had plenty..

Here are some blogs I’ve had:

http://www.bebo.com/hc-julia (main blogging community site until 2007)
http://rosesanctuary.blogspot.com/ (here I have posted my Extension English 2 project, and I write a creative short story in the form of a blog! *warning: not a suitable read for younger audiences*).

Now I only use facebook because many of my friends are from worldwide, and it provides a simple approach on keeping track of them, and it’s sooo cool because there’s so many different applications to keep your interest!
Here’s the link: http://usydedu.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500257437

I even have given a lecture on blogs to 100 Tara teachers and staff (fun except when my ex-english teacher claimed “no wonder you’ve never handed in many essays”).
Here was my speech (with much info found on wikipedia):

As you are well aware, I am a student. I now partake in little engagement with blogs now however I am here to guide you through the use of a blog and point out some issues regarding to it’s use.
Can I just see a show of hands how many people have never seen a blog? Who has used a blog? And those who have no clue what I am on about? *only 3 people maintained a blog, with a dozen only seeing it, and the rest? sigh*
A blog, which is derived from the term weblog, is a website where journal entries are made and a socializing network. It has only become a recent use within the last decade as popularity increases. This is due to the efficient and easy access to the internet, it has become less technical and simply more and more people use it because it is free.
Blogs contain news or as personal online diaries such as MSN Spaces (now refered to as Windows Live Spaces, 30 mil). There are various commonly used blogs such as Bebo (22 mil) , Xanga (40 mil) , Hi5 (40 mil) MySpace (100 mil) , and Yahoo’s 360 degrees (2 mil). *I am sure the figures have increased alot already*
Like any other webpage, a blog has text, images, links, and also photographs, videos and audio.
The web interfaces allow anyone to create, modify and use a blog.
The most obvious advantage is the communication link. I am an introvert, however online, people find me a completely different person. It is the knowledge, or lack there of, that nobody knows who you are and you can say whatever you want. That could also lead to a downfall where people do know your identity. Cyber-bullying can be an issue on social-networking sites, with some teenagers taking advantage of the anonymity of the Internet to abuse and ridicule their peers. The problem is, whatever is posted on another person’s site, you cannot delete or edit someone elses post. Complaining to the site could work, and could get a profile to be removed. Though it would not stop people from posting at different sites.
*then I showed the registration process, and proceeded to explain how to post and add photos etc.*

This blog is for USyd, Design Computing – DECO1200 and DECO2101 – Interaction Design Studio.

For more specific information visit: http://people.arch.usyd.edu.au/~rob/teaching/2007/DECO1200/ (DECO1200) and http://people.arch.usyd.edu.au/~justin/ (DECO2101).

Here’s the USyd handbook info on DECO1200:

“This unit introduces interactivity and multimedia through design projects. Students will develop narrative and storytelling through non-linear interactive multimedia. Elements of interaction design including menus, hotspots, screen design, motion, animation and sound integration will be addressed for various media, including the Internet, CD-ROMs, kiosks, interactive TV, broadcast media and DVD. Management and organisation of interaction through storyboarding and prototyping will cultivate methodologies for responding to a brief. Software used includes Director, Flash, Dreamweaver.
On the successful completion of this unit of study, students will have demonstrated: the application of knowledge of interaction design to a range of contexts, for the Internet and standalone media, through the design project; knowledge of narrative and engagement in non-linear interactive contexts through the design project; knowledge of scripting and markup languages for enabling dynamic content and interactive designs, e.g. Lingo, ActionScript, HTML, JavaScript through tutorial exercises; understanding of interaction developed using mouse, keyboard, computer and traditional interfaces leads to further HCI using innovative methods of interaction in the 3rd year Interface Design Studio.
Contribution to program: this unit is core in the Bachelor of Design Computing program. This UoS builds on knowledge of image design and foundational digital media design techniques introduced in the Digital Design Studio, integrating and applying this knowledge in the context of interactive multimedia, augmenting scripting and interaction design understanding. This unit develops interaction narrative, engagement, curiosity and design methods using the computer interface. This unit lays the groundwork for scripting interactivity using web-based and standalone technologies. It leads on to the subsequent Interface Design Studio which further pursues interaction, moving to mobile, wireless, haptic and spatial sensate interfaces.”
