October 10, 2007 at 11:02 pm | In DECO, Rant, Website, iPhone, iPimp | Leave a CommentOkay.. It has been a really long time since I blogged.. (I almost forgot my username _Someone took HOTCOCOA!!_)
Basically, our website was due last week. I realized that I haven’t done enough work on the website or results.. But I spent AGES on my prototype.. Flash kills sometimes (and last week was most of the times..)
I have a problem, it’s the graphics involved with the prototype.. I only have 1! image!?! (and a little clip).. I want to make it all pretty and full on graphics, but I realized that before, my dialup internet was REALLY slow, and considering how long that took, I wasn’t really looking forward to having to play a game and wait for a minute for everything to show up. So now, it really is a text based game.. Though, to reduce the use of a slow connection, I would want to enhance more of the use of the iphone existing applications and abilities rather than waiting for everything to load for the iPimp.
What do I do now? Well, I already showed the Flash to some people. Many of them liked it, with some commenting about the graphics (read above if you skipped it..). What else? *Sigh* The #1 priority now is to finish the prototype. Basically, all I need to do is add more pages, made-up templates, and then market my application with a wicked website design and sales techniques. *nods*
Oh.. how can I forget? Check out my “Evaluated Minisite” @ http://people.arch.usyd.edu.au/~jtan2093/deco1200/evaluated/ ^^

Finally finished (just 5 minutes before the deadline).
Thursday and Friday was sooooo hectic.
Too many people asking me questions @ class, so I think I might stay at home for future projects (especially when the deadline was today)!
Hahaha
Thursday, I spent Ages REDOING my minisite 1…. I heard from someone that Rob said that it should be a totally different one.. But around uhm.. 5pm? Kaz was talking about it to someone else in the class, and he said you don’t neccessarily Have to.. So I was freaking out about the layout, and I’m like.. OMG >< What a waste of my time (this is because all I had then on the website was the presentation and the speech during our proposals).
But getting up at 6am, and going home at 9pm isn’t really healthy.. I went to bed to do some work, but ended up falling asleep ><
Friday.. This time, got up at 7am.. and got to uni at 8am. But today is my anniversary (2 years and 7 months ^^). So I spent the morning relaxing a bit before I went to 313.
At 11, I showed up and started the evaluation Andrea gave us. It was made by Processing, and about visualizing data. There were a survey, forms etc. Then I think the whole thing took 3 hours.. (11 to 2? yea.. it did ><). The program kind of froze on me twice (and it was awfully slow).. And we had a group discussion afterwards. Nothing really useful under the user evaluations.. But at least I got a donut ^^
Did feedback for most of the day at uni. Didn’t have lunch until 4pm.. (And an hour before, my brain froze because I need food to function, and me without food = me hungry = really hungry = unable to do anything).
Got home around 7ish, made dinner, washed dishes.. Then started working on it at9.. But I’ve finished with the report, feedback, and prototype just before midnight. Very content..
Right now, I’m kinda worried that some people’s minisites aren’t finished, or aren’t showing up..
Many have awesome layouts and alot of content.
My favourite minisites: Lucy (cuteness), Kristian (marketing), Chloe (simplicity), Russel (flash), Patrick (prototype video), Drew (illustration and interaction), & Suna (banner). I’ve judged these on what the person did for his/herself – rather than copy and paste things. It’s late, I might have missed out on some awesome creations. Let me know if you want yourself on this list!
Goodluck all for minisite 2!!

August 29, 2007 at 11:48 pm | In DECO, Prototype1, Rant, Website | 1 CommentOkay.. I’ve had my link to my blog there for ages..
Yesterday and today, I’ve been uploading all my DECO1008 3D Maya tutorial online. Spent ages trying to do the layout (and I just realized, my 13.3″ screen doesnt display the layout as well as a larger display would. At least my 15″ desktop screen can fit it in without it looking weird.
Check it out here: http://people.arch.usyd.edu.au/~jtan2093/deco1008/a1
What I did was, use the <div id=”…”> to separate the original image and the modelled image, and fit into one line but 2 columns. So then, I had to modify the css and the xhtml code (since I haven’t done this before, and like.. did alot of testing). I figured out what I need, which is just to state the margin to the left, and how many pixels it was from the left >< (Thanks to Kristian’s nice website layout).
But ohhhh Eileen has the cutest Flash on her website! its like.. so adorable.
Omg, yes, the point is, I’m worried about the due date for the minisite, is it tomorrow? (haha actually, more like today) or on Apec? And the word “prototype” still bugs me.. It’s just the documentation I haven’t put up.. Lucky I had a speech, so I can derive what I’ve got on there (and from my blog) to post the report.. I still don’t know why I worry (okay, nvm me ranting)..
So.. hmm
Yea.. I’m going to sleep. lol

August 27, 2007 at 8:10 pm | In DECO, Website | Leave a Commenthmm, I just remembered.. I still don’t get the <span> in the <divs> (so I guess I should look it up)
Anyways, I did a little more css on my website in the last few days, un-noticeable really since all I did was (painstakingly) editted my 9 index.htmls from html to Xhtml with no errors. I editted it again today, and haven’t checked it yet (doing it now.. @ http://validator.w3.org/). It’s too hard to work directly from the unix drive (and via smftp) so copying and pasting to test is irritating me.
W00T! “This Page Is Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional!” (no I am not attempting strict).. But all I did was test my homepage >< Opps 36 errors on a page.. Then again, I’ve been focusing more on the
.style_Name {
attribute : value ;
}
And completely forgot about the ending tags lol
I changed the background from a swarovski star and moon crystal pendant pictures I took and editted in photos, with nice blue theme.. to uhm.. this black and white tattoo design I did last semester (because my boyfriend said that it was too empty for him- he’s got a 17″ screen, and I only accomodated those with a 1024 x 768 pixel range). I’m planning on adding a banner with the image on the other side of the tshirt (the one with the butterfly). But now, bare with me.. (it does look too plain)
*continues editting code*

August 25, 2007 at 8:22 am | In Classes, DECO, Presentation, iPhone, iPimp | Leave a CommentHere’s my speech:
iPimp DECO1200 Presentation 1 Before I start, is anyone younger than 18 here? iPimp What I propose is simply a pimping game. A game where it’s challenging what is possible – challenging what is lawful, moral and right. It’s an interactive game providing maximum amusement and enjoyment with competitive entertainment and bonus prizes. *click* Basically, all you do is recruit people to earn money, power and glory. These people you ‘recruit’ are called your whores. Gentlemen you are the pimps, and ladies you are the madams. Pimps and madams use the camera function to take a photo of the target, and spam everyone around them via Bluetooth with a message saying that they ‘are your bitches now’. In order for them to be free, they would have to join the game, and choose to remain loyal (and try to gang up on you with the rest of your whores) or become a cop (of course there’s always a ‘crooked’ cop). Here I added what a potential user wanted – the sides of good and evil. Also, those religious, moral, or whomever opposes the game can join and be the good cops, and try to turn everyone else who is not on their side into the jail. So what use is having recruits? They must bring you profit where you can further gain money and of course power. In the meantime, you can utilize your pimp status to make them pose for you and you can add outfits and bling to their new photos. You can game out on the streets, at parties and clubs, and then compete against each other, or in communities (otherwise known as gangs). If you want, you can also check out a map connected with Google, to display who’s owning the block. As for the being the top with the most whores and money, we will reward the best player with his or her very own outfit to match their rank. iPimp is directed for an adult market of 18+. But in reality we all know a gaming experience starts earlier (roughly 13). The user would want to play a game which they believe would deliver them an advantage. The user group would be more appealing to the male audience, gamers (who doesn’t mind annoying people with spam), people with a high priority in their social life, those who want a little personal gain in their stash (as we like being greedy). Personally, all I would like in this game is just to have a little fun and mess around with photos. I did a quick online questionnaire using my raw, initial proposal. I realized that various users want different things from the system, such as one wanted for a good game, a clever scoring system. Another person wanted facial recognition software, to track down information of the recruits. Another, a rating system for the photos taken, and definitely obtaining revenue from it. Ultimately, I can only satisfy some people, not all. To test my idea, I will develop a storyboard first of the elements involved in the game, and perhaps find alternative ideas within it. Then I set out to question, survey, and converse with the users with a visual prototype (like using index cards) and involve the users further into the design process. *click* A guy commented that ‘in the society we live in such reckless game will not be taken in because it’s about whores and pimps. Obviously family members (parents especially) would avoid getting their children involve. It’s like in an education system, it’s teaching a child how to be a pimp.’ This leads to my first question, “how would I make this game positive in a way to be allowed in mainstream society?”. Considering the unethical nature of this game, maybe now it would be readily accepted by some, but be more than disapproving to the rest. Because from what I can see now, I have most of the male audience’s attention, but not the females. So my second question is, “what incentives can I have to involve more of the female audience?” From the experience I have gained in online games where males are the majority of the population, it seems that females are more confronted by the lack of their same-sex peers, so they steer away from the alien world (or they are just plainly not interested in games). In a game like this, “would you want to be anonymous or proud of your achievements?” Some people like boasting and showing off, whilst others would want to perhaps want to be worshipped and known as the ‘mysterious X’? This is also for protecting your pimp identity, or fear of being sabotaged because you’re the big boss. Futura things I need to do is to do more research in the technical department of how I’m going to work this out if some problems; like a limited Bluetooth range, or very slow internet access would hinder the game’s capabilities. Or I could feign ignorance and say this game is to be developed in a few years time. Perhaps it’s hard for you to choose between your desires and your upright principles. But right now, *camera* you’ve all been whored!

Alot of controversy with this application..
Nathan saying “where do you come up with these ideas?” well uhm..
Someone said “isn’t it degrading for women?” well, I never said the whores must be women did I?
To me, iPimp isn’t about the idea of ’sex’, its just the $$ and the “sexiness” but not sex sex.. Uh.. get what I mean? hmm

August 10, 2007 at 12:45 pm | In DECO | Leave a CommentI am heading towards the gaming entertainments of the iPhone.
On the train, I brainstormed a bit. Some are in reference to the web 2.0 characteristics.
So the ‘missile’ game can either be close range (from train seats to different stations) – the problem is that people sitting beside the players might be a little paranoid (terrorism occuring) if anything was mentioned voice wise. If it is close range, it would be like the jippii.co.uk > multimedia > cannon game where the user sets the projection and strength and attempt to bomb each other while they are sitting next to each other. The current forecast can be included to add more realism (aka wind affecting the strength).
The distance can be across the world. Where the user sets how fast time goes, so the user controls data aka the time. So you can travel to America in a few seconds (whereas a real one would take a few hours) – the fast forward ability – then slow it down when you near Florida or something..
You obtain points when you hit the target, and this you can convert it to buy barracks or more ammunition. (something like IWKY – I Will Kill You game – similar again to Warcraft)
The ranking is derived by points.

August 10, 2007 at 12:12 am | In Classes, DECO | Leave a Commentomg Stupid blackout and I really was wanting to do alota work today about this (and start blogging more)..
Anyways, so today I was going home by train and sitting down, reading about web 2.0 again. I read a different lecture note, this time Xiang Yu’s 2006 lecture notes (part from wiki).
The highlights of web 2.0 (useful for me – you can check out the whole thing at http://people.arch.usyd.edu.au/~rob/teaching/2006/DECO2102/DECO2102-Slides-08.pdf )
- let people collaborate and share information in new ways
- people should be active contributors, helping customize media and technology for their Own purposes
- software that gets better the more people uses it
- user owns the data on the site and can exert control over the data
Going to continue with this in relation to Idea 2 – the missile/cannon game.
(Hopefully, this is my main main project because I really can’t seem to make up my mind atm)
